I imagine there are many perfectionist translators who would do the same that Mr. Ashouri does ostensibly, ONLY IF they didn’t have to depend on translating for making ends meet.

Dear AmirT, [… ] a simple answer to your reasoning is that IF YOU PROVIDE HIGH-QUALITY TRANSLATION, YOU WILL BE PAID MORE FOR LESS PAGES AND YOU DON’T NEED TO WORRY SO MUCH ABOUT ‘MAKING THE ENDS MEET’:)
___
Amirmehdi: Dear Pejman, I disagree with you. In Iran, there’s no such rule. Even "providers of high-quality translations" may be paid only up to 5% more than others. Nobody cares, you know.

Dear Amirmehdi, I was not specifically talking about Iran. Many international language service providers are now outsourcing their translation jobs to freelance translators and interpreters. In some cases the translator and the client sit in different countries thousands of miles away. However, as Mr. Ghiasi (2) duly mentioned, to compete in a dollar-driven world a freelance translator has to have good ’sense of marketing’. This means providing the right content on the right time with competitive, if not outstanding, quality. Having established his/her reputation as a ‘winner’ through repeated good, if not best, sellers, he can sometimes call the price. Such a person needs to be versatile not translating the same type of material with the same ‘tone’ and taste all the time. I believe the late Mohammad Ghazi was such a translator. His name on a book guaranteed selling of it, as he was known not only for his quality translations but also for his refined choice of content. Although I’m not a professional translator, I called the price (about twice the usual rate) for a translated content I’ve chosen some years ago in Iran. I knew that the publisher wants the work and the publisher knew that I can easily sell it to his competitor. I choose the content myself.
