Reading Jhumpa Lahiri in Carla Nascimento I´ve just finished reading The Namesake. As I´m Brazillian and know almost nothing about Indian habits and culture, I can say that the novel reaches a much larger universe than the Indian-American. That´s why I could sometimes strongly identify with Moushoumi and Gogol. I believe that good writers are good writers everywhere (specially in prose, because poetry is a different case), and the book touched me for the sensibility in expressing the feelings of people who are submitted to cultural crossing, which sometimes must happen even inside the same country, among different social classes or religious or ideological groups, as it happened in my case. I think that´s the result of her talent to build such strongly human characters, which also has some debits with Russian literature. The whole structure of the narrative is perfect in my opinion.
